Equipment is taken from a yard, a job site or a truck. The claim belongs under inland marine, not commercial property: the standard property form covers business personal property only within 100 feet of your described premises, caps off-premises coverage at $10,000, and that extension expressly does not apply to property in or on a vehicle.
What You Get

Which policy actually responds

And, just as importantly, which one does not.

02

NOT commercial property, beyond 100 feet

And not at all for anything in or on a vehicle, under the standard form’s own wording.

03

NOT commercial auto, for the contents

Auto physical damage insures the truck. The jetter and the camera reel inside it are not the covered auto.

04

Your rental contract, if the machine was hired

Dealer terms commonly transfer the entire risk of loss to you on delivery and require your policy to cover non-owned equipment in your care, custody and control.

Why It Matters

What stops it happening to you

02

Choose the valuation deliberately

Actual cash value is the default and pays depreciated value. On a ten-year-old vacuum pump that gap can exceed the premium difference to fix it.

03

Record serial numbers before you need them

Recovery and claim settlement both depend on identification.

04

Check rented equipment is covered

It is an optional coverage with its own limit, not something that comes along automatically.

The Incident

Equipment Stolen from the Yard

What actually happened

Contractor equipment theft is organised and persistent. In September 2025 authorities reported a multi-state scheme involving more than $185,000 of equipment taken across Maryland and Virginia, and separately a Florida ring in which seven people were arrested over roughly $2 million in stolen construction equipment. We name no contractors here because the named parties in these matters are the accused thieves, not the businesses that lost the machines.

Questions We Get A Lot

Straight answers, no insurance-speak

The correct home for machinery and tools that move. Owned, and rented or borrowed where that coverage has been elected.

And not at all for anything in or on a vehicle, under the standard form’s own wording.

Equipment schedules go stale fast in this trade. The jetter bought last spring is frequently not on the policy.

It is an optional coverage with its own limit, not something that comes along automatically.

That depends on your endorsements rather than your limits. Two policies with identical limits can behave completely differently on this scenario. Send your declarations including the endorsement schedule and we will tell you what we find.

Same day. Every time. That is an operating rule here, not a marketing promise.
