A septic contractor in Minnesota typically needs commercial general liability, commercial auto covering pump and vacuum trucks, workers compensation, inland marine for equipment, and pollution liability, which a standard contractor general liability policy usually excludes. Onsite sewage systems in Minnesota are regulated by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA). Septic Cleaning Insurance Group is licensed in Minnesota, licence #40821720. Coverage requirements and licensing vary by county and by the specific work performed.

How We Work in Minnesota

The Septic Cleaning Insurance Group Policy Review

Not a sales script: the same process every Minnesota septic account goes through before we quote it.

1

We read your current policy, line by line

Not a skim. If you’re already insured, we find the actual gaps before we talk about switching anything.

2

We check it against real Minnesota septic risk

Pumping, installation, disposal, excavation: checked against pollution and environmental liability specifically, not bundled as an afterthought.

3

We match you to carriers who get the trade

Standard markets when they fit. Specialty and E&S markets in reserve for when they don’t.

4

You hear back the same day

No multi-week runaround. That’s an operating rule here, not a promise we make and forget.

What We Offer in Minnesota

Coverage built for how Minnesota septic businesses actually work

Most agents sell one general liability policy and call it done. Here’s what actually needs to be on the table.

01 – Core Coverage

General & Commercial Auto

Trucks, tanks, and crews covered the right way, not bundled generically with every other type of contractor.

03 – Specialty

Specialty Markets

When standard carriers can’t fit your risk, we have options that can. We don’t just turn you away.

Why Minnesota Septic Contractors Switch To Us

Operating principles, not marketing lines

We read the whole policy before we sell it

No pass-through, no blind binding. If it doesn’t fit your operation, we say so before you sign anything.

If a carrier doesn’t understand septic risk, we don’t use them

And we keep specialty/E&S markets in reserve for when standard carriers can’t fit your risk at all.

We call you back the same day

Accessibility isn’t a slogan here. It’s an operating rule.

Who We Insure in Minnesota

We place coverage for every type of septic operation

Each segment carries different risk and gets underwritten differently.

Residential pumping

Routine residential septic pumping and service calls: the most common starting risk profile.

Commercial pumping

Grease traps, commercial systems, and higher-volume accounts with different liability exposure.

Pumping plus inspections

Add inspection work and your E&O exposure changes, so coverage needs to follow.

Full service

Pumping, inspections, repair, and installation, with excavation and drain-field work included: the highest-complexity profile.

Common misconception: “My general liability policy covers everything.”

General liability generally excludes pollution and environmental contamination. It’s built for everyday bodily injury and property damage, not a failed leach field or septage contamination. If a claim like that hits, GL alone typically won’t respond. Read the exclusions with your agent before a claim, not during one.

Minnesota Licensing & Regulation

Who regulates septic work in Minnesota

Verified, Minnesota-specific
  • Minnesota regulates septic systems as “Individual/Subsurface Sewage Treatment Systems” (ISTS/SSTS) under Minnesota Rules Chapters 7080 through 7083, adopted under authority of Minnesota Statutes section 115.55.
  • Chapter 7080 sets the statewide purpose, design, and performance standards.
  • Chapter 7081 sets standards for midsized SSTS, Chapter 7082 governs local SSTS program administration, and Chapter 7083 covers licensing and certification categories plus installer, maintainer and inspector business obligations (for example Part 7083.0760 on installation licences).
  • Day-to-day permitting and enforcement is delegated to county or local units of government that administer MPCA-compliant local SSTS ordinances.
  • The MPCA itself issues the statewide SSTS business license and individual professional certifications (installer, maintainer, service provider, designer, inspector).
  • Installers pay a $25-per-tank septic system tank fee under Minnesota Statutes section 115.551, and submit the reporting form to the commissioner by January 31 for the previous calendar year’s installations under Minnesota Rules part 7083.0760, subpart 2(I), including notification if no tanks were installed. Note the statute itself sets a January 30 payment date; the January 31 form deadline comes from the rule.
  • Holding an SSTS business licence also requires a minimum of $100,000 of general liability insurance and a corporate surety bond of at least $25,000, written by a corporate surety licensed in Minnesota (Minn. R. 7083.1000, subp. 1).

The Minnesota Septic Trade

What makes Minnesota septic risk different

Minnesota-specific risk context
  • Minnesota has a very large rural and lake-cabin population relying on individual septic systems, with the MPCA estimating roughly half a million SSTS statewide.
  • This SSTS footprint is concentrated in exurban Twin Cities fringe counties and the state’s extensive lakes region (Brainerd Lakes, Alexandria, Detroit Lakes, Grand Rapids area).
  • Clay-heavy soils in parts of southern/western Minnesota and high water tables, combined with thousands of natural lakes, create elevated risk of system failure and nearby-surface-water contamination.
  • That elevated risk drives stricter local setback and mounded/at-grade system requirements in many counties.
  • Licensing is unusually fragmented for underwriters to track: MPCA issues the statewide business license and individual certifications (installer, maintainer, inspector, designer, service provider).
  • Many counties layer on their own local SSTS ordinance administration and permit review on top of the state framework.

Septic Cleaning Insurance Group

Specialty septic & pumping contractor underwriting

We built this agency around one gap we kept seeing: big-box commercial insurers write septic contractor policies the same way they write policies for any other trade, missing the environmental and pollution exposure that actually matters in this business. Our team goes deep on septic-specific risk before recommending coverage, maintains relationships with carriers who understand pumping, installation, and disposal operations specifically, and keeps specialty/E&S markets in reserve for the accounts that standard carriers won’t touch.

Questions We Get A Lot

Straight answers, no insurance-speak

Yes. License #40821720 (NPN 7642818). See the Minnesota Licensing & Regulation section above for exactly who regulates septic work here; we handle the insurance side specifically for septic and pumping contractors operating under those rules.

Most general contractor-insurance agents sell septic businesses one broad general liability policy without understanding the pollution and environmental exposure specific to pumping, installation, and disposal work. We go deep on septic-specific underwriting before recommending anything.

Yes. Renewal rate shock is one of the most common reasons septic business owners come to us. We read your current policy in full, identify what’s actually driving the increase, and shop it against carriers who understand septic risk specifically.

If you service septic systems, yes. A failed leach field or cross-contamination incident is an environmental liability claim, not a general liability claim, and a standard GL policy typically won’t cover it.

Same day. Every time. That’s an operating rule here, not a marketing promise.
