A septic contractor in Utah typically needs commercial general liability, commercial auto covering pump and vacuum trucks, workers compensation, inland marine for equipment, and pollution liability, which a standard contractor general liability policy usually excludes. Onsite sewage systems in Utah are regulated by the Utah Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). Septic Cleaning Insurance Group is licensed in Utah, licence #998444. Coverage requirements and licensing vary by county and by the specific work performed.

How We Work in Utah

The Septic Cleaning Insurance Group Policy Review

Not a sales script: the same process every Utah septic account goes through before we quote it.

1

We read your current policy, line by line

Not a skim. If you’re already insured, we find the actual gaps before we talk about switching anything.

2

We check it against real Utah septic risk

Pumping, installation, disposal, excavation: checked against pollution and environmental liability specifically, not bundled as an afterthought.

3

We match you to carriers who get the trade

Standard markets when they fit. Specialty and E&S markets in reserve for when they don’t.

4

You hear back the same day

No multi-week runaround. That’s an operating rule here, not a promise we make and forget.

What We Offer in Utah

Coverage built for how Utah septic businesses actually work

Most agents sell one general liability policy and call it done. Here’s what actually needs to be on the table.

01 – Core Coverage

General & Commercial Auto

Trucks, tanks, and crews covered the right way, not bundled generically with every other type of contractor.

03 – Specialty

Specialty Markets

When standard carriers can’t fit your risk, we have options that can. We don’t just turn you away.

Why Utah Septic Contractors Switch To Us

Operating principles, not marketing lines

We read the whole policy before we sell it

No pass-through, no blind binding. If it doesn’t fit your operation, we say so before you sign anything.

If a carrier doesn’t understand septic risk, we don’t use them

And we keep specialty/E&S markets in reserve for when standard carriers can’t fit your risk at all.

We call you back the same day

Accessibility isn’t a slogan here. It’s an operating rule.

Who We Insure in Utah

We place coverage for every type of septic operation

Each segment carries different risk and gets underwritten differently.

Residential pumping

Routine residential septic pumping and service calls: the most common starting risk profile.

Commercial pumping

Grease traps, commercial systems, and higher-volume accounts with different liability exposure.

Pumping plus inspections

Add inspection work and your E&O exposure changes, so coverage needs to follow.

Full service

Pumping, inspections, repair, and installation, with excavation and drain-field work included: the highest-complexity profile.

Common misconception: “My general liability policy covers everything.”

General liability generally excludes pollution and environmental contamination. It’s built for everyday bodily injury and property damage, not a failed leach field or septage contamination. If a claim like that hits, GL alone typically won’t respond. Read the exclusions with your agent before a claim, not during one.

Utah Licensing & Regulation

Who regulates septic work in Utah

Verified, Utah-specific
  • Utah septic systems are governed by Utah Administrative Code R317-4, “Onsite Wastewater Systems,” adopted under the Division of Water Quality (DWQ) within DEQ; most recently substantively amended June 29, 2023.
  • R317-4 sets statewide tank standards: minimum liquid capacity of 1,000 gallons for up to three bedrooms, 1,250 gallons for four bedrooms, plus 250 gallons for each additional bedroom.
  • R317-4 also sets standards for soil/site evaluation and percolation testing, and setback distances from wells and surface water.
  • Plans must be prepared by individuals certified under Rule R317-11, at one of three certification levels: soil evaluation; conventional system design/inspection/maintenance; or alternative system design/inspection/maintenance.
  • Per R317-4-5 (Plan Review and Permitting), no construction may begin until the local health department having jurisdiction (the “regulatory authority”) issues a construction permit; that department also handles plan submission, pre-cover inspection before backfill, and issuance of the final operating permit.
  • DEQ’s Division of Water Quality sets the statewide technical rule (R317-4) and certifies onsite professionals under R317-11: Level 1 soil evaluation and percolation testing, Level 2 design, inspection and maintenance of conventional systems, and Level 3 the same for alternative systems. It does not license the contractor performing the installation. Contractor licensing runs through the Department of Commerce, Division of Professional Licensing under Utah Code Title 58, Chapter 55, and Utah Code 58-55-302 requires a licensed contractor to carry public liability insurance in an amount set by DOPL rule rather than by the statute.

The Utah Septic Trade

What makes Utah septic risk different

Utah-specific risk context
  • Septic and well-water systems are common across Utah’s many rural and semi-rural counties outside the Wasatch Front urban corridor, where municipal sewer doesn’t reach new subdivisions, agricultural parcels, or mountain/canyon communities.
  • This means septic installation and pumping work spans a wide range of soil and elevation conditions: high-desert clay in the south to granular mountain soils and high water tables near lakes and rivers in the north.
  • Utah’s arid, often rocky or clay-heavy soils in many regions can complicate percolation rates and drainfield sizing.
  • This complication is part of why the state mandates certified soil evaluators and tiered installer/designer certification rather than leaving site assessment to general contractors.
  • Underwriters should expect septic contractors in Utah to hold a DOPL contractor licence, with DWQ onsite-professional certification where they design, evaluate or inspect and operate under their local health department’s permit and inspection regimes rather than a single uniform statewide licensing board.

Septic Cleaning Insurance Group

Specialty septic & pumping contractor underwriting

We built this agency around one gap we kept seeing: big-box commercial insurers write septic contractor policies the same way they write policies for any other trade, missing the environmental and pollution exposure that actually matters in this business. Our team goes deep on septic-specific risk before recommending coverage, maintains relationships with carriers who understand pumping, installation, and disposal operations specifically, and keeps specialty/E&S markets in reserve for the accounts that standard carriers won’t touch.

Questions We Get A Lot

Straight answers, no insurance-speak

Yes. License #998444 (NPN 7642818). See the Utah Licensing & Regulation section above for exactly who regulates septic work here; we handle the insurance side specifically for septic and pumping contractors operating under those rules.

Most general contractor-insurance agents sell septic businesses one broad general liability policy without understanding the pollution and environmental exposure specific to pumping, installation, and disposal work. We go deep on septic-specific underwriting before recommending anything.

Yes. Renewal rate shock is one of the most common reasons septic business owners come to us. We read your current policy in full, identify what’s actually driving the increase, and shop it against carriers who understand septic risk specifically.

If you service septic systems, yes. A failed leach field or cross-contamination incident is an environmental liability claim, not a general liability claim, and a standard GL policy typically won’t cover it.

Same day. Every time. That’s an operating rule here, not a marketing promise.
