A regulator revokes a sewage disposal service licence for unpermitted work and unpaid penalties. There is no insurance claim here at all, which is the point. For a licensed trade the licence is the asset, and the exposures that threaten it are administrative rather than accidental.
What You Get

Which policy actually responds

And, just as importantly, which one does not.

02

Your surety bond is at risk too

A paid bond claim can trigger cancellation, and because the bond is a condition of licensure, cancellation can suspend the licence. See surety bonds.

03

Business income cover will not help

It responds to physical damage, not to regulatory action.

04

Which makes compliance the only control

Permits pulled, inspections called, penalties paid on time.

Why It Matters

What stops it happening to you

02

Call for inspection before you cover

Backfilling ahead of inspection can mean digging the job twice and leaves a documented failure in the permit file.

03

Pay penalties when they land

Two unpaid penalties across three years turned enforceable findings into a revocation.

04

Watch what your advertising claims

The order specifically required the company to stop advertising as licensed.

The Incident

Licence Revoked After Unpermitted Work

What actually happened

In December 2016 an Oregon state environmental regulator revoked a septic company’s sewage disposal service licence. The findings included performing services without proper licensing, constructing and repairing onsite systems without permits, disposing of sewage in unauthorised locations, and failing to pay two earlier penalties, of $1,750 from 2013 and $7,305 from 2015, both of which remained unpaid. The company was ordered to cease operations, remove regulator-issued labels from its equipment within 14 days, surrender the licence, and stop advertising as licensed.

We only write this trade, and we read the policy before we sell it. More on the operations we insure and the coverage behind them.

Questions We Get A Lot

Straight answers, no insurance-speak

Loss of licence is not an insured peril. There is no coverage for being told to stop trading.

Unpermitted installation was the lead finding. It is also the easiest thing for a regulator to prove from its own records.

The order specifically required the company to stop advertising as licensed.

That depends on your endorsements rather than your limits. Two policies with identical limits can behave completely differently on this scenario. Send your declarations including the endorsement schedule and we will tell you what we find.
