Tanker Spill
on the Road.
A rollover or a valve failure puts the load on the roadway. This is the claim where most septic auto policies quietly do not respond.

Which policy actually responds
And, just as importantly, which one does not.
Commercial auto, for the vehicle and third-party injury
Liability for injury and property damage you cause with the truck, and physical damage on the truck itself.
NOT the spilled load, on a standard form
The pollution exclusion removes it, and the covered pollution cost definition removes the cleanup too.
Endorsement CA 99 48, if you have it
It narrows the pollution exclusion so it applies only to liability assumed under contract, and replaces the cleanup-cost definition so the in-transit carve-out disappears. Most policies we review do not carry it.
Contractors pollution liability, for the operations side
Which answers a release at the customer’s property. The auto endorsement does not reach that, and the two are complementary.
What stops it happening to you
Check your declarations for the endorsement
This is a two-minute check and it is the single most valuable thing on a hauling account.
Treat valve discipline as a procedure
A valve left part-open is not a dramatic failure, and it still empties a tank across a route.
Mind the weight and the load shift
A partially filled tank behaves differently from a full one. Driver training on this trade’s vehicles is not generic fleet training.
Know who you call
A spill response plan with numbers in it is worth more at 6am than a policy document.
Tanker Spill on the Road
What actually happened
We are deliberately not naming an operator here. Highway spills of this kind are reported regularly in local news, typically involving a small regional hauler, and are usually resolved without any published enforcement outcome. Naming a small business over a crash on the basis of a local news item is not something we will do. The mechanics are what matter, and they are the same in every one of them: a loaded tanker leaves the roadway or a fitting fails, several thousand gallons reach the shoulder and the drainage, and the cleanup bill arrives before anyone has determined fault.

We only write this trade, and we read the policy before we sell it. More on the operations we insure and the coverage behind them.

That depends on your endorsements rather than your limits. Two policies with identical limits can behave completely differently on this scenario. Send your declarations including the endorsement schedule and we will tell you what we find.
Same day. Every time. That is an operating rule here, not a marketing promise.
