Septic Contractor Insurance Coverage

What Septic Contractors
Actually Need Covered.

Eight coverage lines make up a real septic contractor insurance program. Here is what each one does, which ones your state requires, and the one almost every standard policy leaves out.

A septic contractor insurance program is built from general liability, contractors pollution liability, commercial auto, contractors equipment, workers compensation, professional liability, umbrella, and a surety bond where the state requires one. The line most often missing is pollution liability, because a standard general liability form excludes pollutants “transported, handled, stored, treated, disposed of, or processed as waste” — which is what septic work is.
What You Get

The eight lines, and what each one is for

Not every operation needs all eight. Which ones you need depends on whether you pump, install, haul, or run portable units, and on the contracts you sign.

02

Commercial General Liability

The base layer: third-party bodily injury and property damage from your operations and premises. Required at $500,000 in Ohio and $100,000 in Minnesota to hold a septic licence. Necessary, and on its own not sufficient. Read the full breakdown.

03

Commercial Auto

Pump trucks and vacuum tankers are the most expensive thing you put on the road and the most common source of a serious claim. Rated differently from a pickup fleet because of weight, tank contents and route profile. Read the full breakdown.

04

Contractors Equipment and Inland Marine

Covers the equipment itself rather than your liability to others: pumps, hoses, tanks, jetters, and an installation floater for materials in transit or staged on a job site before the work is accepted. Read the full breakdown.

05

Workers Compensation

How your payroll is classified drives the premium, and septic work does not sit in one tidy code. Classification follows the operation performed rather than the trade name, so pumping, excavation and tank setting can land in different codes, and the codes themselves vary by state bureau. Read the full breakdown.

06

Professional Liability

For design and specification exposure. If you size a system, lay out a drainfield or certify an inspection, a claim that the design was wrong is an errors and omissions claim, not a general liability one. Read the full breakdown.

07

Umbrella and Excess Liability

Sits above the primary limits. Matters most when a municipal or commercial contract specifies limits higher than your underlying policies carry. Read the full breakdown.

08

Surety Bonds

Ohio, Minnesota and California all require a bond to hold a licence. Worth being precise about what it is: a guarantee running to your customer for workmanship, not third-party coverage, and not a substitute for insurance. Read the full breakdown.

How We Work

The Septic Cleaning Insurance Group Policy Review

1

We read the whole policy

Before we quote anything we read what you already have, cover to cover, and tell you plainly what it does and does not do.

2

We map your actual operation

Pumping, installation, hauling, grease trap, portable units: each one underwrites differently. We classify what you really do, not a generic contractor code.

3

We shop carriers who understand septic risk

Standard markets when they fit, specialty and E&S markets when they do not. If a carrier does not understand pollution exposure, we do not use them.

4

We explain the quote in plain language

You get the number, the limits, the exclusions that matter, and the reasoning. No pass-through, no blind binding.

Why It Matters

Why work through an agency that only writes this trade

01

We read the exclusions, not just the limits

Two policies with identical limits can behave completely differently when a septage claim hits. The difference lives in the endorsements, which is where we start.

02

Your operation gets classified correctly

Pumping, excavation and tank setting are different operations and can carry different classifications. Getting that wrong costs money at audit and can jeopardise a claim.

03

Specialty markets when standard carriers will not fit the risk

If a standard carrier declines your class, that is not the end of the conversation. We keep specialty and surplus-lines markets in reserve for exactly that.

04

You get told when you do not need something

If your current policy already handles an exposure, we will say so. We would rather lose the sale than sell you a duplicate policy.

Septic Cleaning Insurance Group

Specialty septic & pumping contractor underwriting · NPN 7642818 · Licensed in 28 states

We built this agency around one gap we kept seeing: big-box commercial insurers write septic contractor policies the same way they write policies for any other trade, missing the environmental and pollution exposure that actually matters in this business. Our team goes deep on septic-specific risk before recommending coverage, maintains relationships with carriers who understand pumping, installation, and disposal operations specifically, and keeps specialty and E&S markets in reserve for the accounts standard carriers will not touch.

Questions We Get A Lot

Straight answers, no insurance-speak

At minimum: general liability, commercial auto for the trucks, workers compensation if you have employees, and equipment coverage. For a pumping, hauling or land-application operation we would also expect contractors pollution liability, because the general liability form excludes the waste you handle.

A BOP bundles property and general liability at a lower price, and for some small operations it is a reasonable base. It does not solve the pollution exclusion, it does not cover your trucks, and it does not cover employee injury. It is a starting point, not a program.

Almost certainly not. ISO form CG 00 01 excludes pollutants transported, handled, stored, treated or disposed of as waste, and defines waste as a pollutant. A Wisconsin septage hauler argued otherwise in 2014 and lost.

Yes, meaningfully. Installation carries excavation exposure, underground utility strikes, and completed operations risk if a system fails after you leave. Pumping and hauling carry transit and disposal-site exposure. We classify what you actually do rather than writing everyone as a generic contractor.

Yes, within the 28 states we are licensed in. Multi-state operations need attention to where the work is performed, where the vehicles are garaged, and which state’s licensing and bond rules apply.

Same day. Every time. That is an operating rule here, not a marketing promise.
