A septic contractor in California typically needs commercial general liability, commercial auto covering pump and vacuum trucks, workers compensation, inland marine for equipment, and pollution liability, which a standard contractor general liability policy usually excludes. Onsite sewage systems in California are regulated by the State Water Resources Control Board. Septic Cleaning Insurance Group is licensed in California, licence #0G67847. Coverage requirements and licensing vary by county and by the specific work performed.

How We Work in California

The Septic Cleaning Insurance Group Policy Review

Not a sales script: the same process every California septic account goes through before we quote it.

1

We read your current policy, line by line

Not a skim. If you’re already insured, we find the actual gaps before we talk about switching anything.

2

We check it against real California septic risk

Pumping, installation, disposal, excavation: checked against pollution and environmental liability specifically, not bundled as an afterthought.

3

We match you to carriers who get the trade

Standard markets when they fit. Specialty and E&S markets in reserve for when they don’t.

4

You hear back the same day

No multi-week runaround. That’s an operating rule here, not a promise we make and forget.

What We Offer in California

Coverage built for how California septic businesses actually work

Most agents sell one general liability policy and call it done. Here’s what actually needs to be on the table.

01 – Core Coverage

General & Commercial Auto

Trucks, tanks, and crews covered the right way, not bundled generically with every other type of contractor.

03 – Specialty

Specialty Markets

When standard carriers can’t fit your risk, we have options that can. We don’t just turn you away.

Why California Septic Contractors Switch To Us

Operating principles, not marketing lines

We read the whole policy before we sell it

No pass-through, no blind binding. If it doesn’t fit your operation, we say so before you sign anything.

If a carrier doesn’t understand septic risk, we don’t use them

And we keep specialty/E&S markets in reserve for when standard carriers can’t fit your risk at all.

We call you back the same day

Accessibility isn’t a slogan here. It’s an operating rule.

Who We Insure in California

We place coverage for every type of septic operation

Each segment carries different risk and gets underwritten differently.

Residential pumping

Routine residential septic pumping and service calls: the most common starting risk profile.

Commercial pumping

Grease traps, commercial systems, and higher-volume accounts with different liability exposure.

Pumping plus inspections

Add inspection work and your E&O exposure changes, so coverage needs to follow.

Full service

Pumping, inspections, repair, and installation, with excavation and drain-field work included: the highest-complexity profile.

Common misconception: “My general liability policy covers everything.”

General liability generally excludes pollution and environmental contamination. It’s built for everyday bodily injury and property damage, not a failed leach field or septage contamination. If a claim like that hits, GL alone typically won’t respond. Read the exclusions with your agent before a claim, not during one.

California Licensing & Regulation

Who regulates septic work in California

Verified, California-specific
  • California regulates septic systems statewide under the Water Quality Control Policy for Siting, Design, Operation, and Maintenance of Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems (the “OWTS Policy”).
  • The OWTS Policy was originally adopted by the State Water Resources Control Board on June 19, 2012, with its conditional waiver renewed in April 2018 and again in April 2023 (approved by the Office of Administrative Law on September 26, 2023).
  • The policy sets statewide minimum standards and assigns the nine Regional Water Quality Control Boards principal responsibility for implementation, incorporating OWTS Policy requirements into each region’s basin plan.
  • Actual permitting, inspection, and enforcement for individual septic installations is carried out locally: counties operate Local Agency Management Programs (LAMPs), generally administered by county environmental health departments, under agreements with their Regional Board.
  • The State Water Board maintains a LAMP contact list and local-agency reporting requirements.
  • Contractors who install or repair septic systems (cesspools, septic tanks, leach fields, and related sewage-disposal structures) must hold a California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) C-42 Sanitation System license (or an “A” General Engineering or, for certain components, C-36 Plumbing license), under authority of 16 CCR Division 8, Article 3 and Business and Professions Code Sections 7008 and 7059.

The California Septic Trade

What makes California septic risk different

California-specific risk context
  • Septic/onsite wastewater systems are a major presence in California despite its urban reputation: the State Water Board’s OWTS Policy itself notes more than 1.2 million onsite systems installed and operating statewide.
  • These systems are concentrated in rural and semi-rural counties (foothills, North Coast, Central Valley periphery, and mountain/high-desert communities) where municipal sewer never reached, as well as older unincorporated subdivisions near coastal and inland cities.
  • Soil and groundwater vary widely across the state: poorly-draining clay soils and high water tables in parts of the Central Valley and North Coast, shallow bedrock in foothill and mountain terrain, and wildfire-burn-scar erosion risk in many septic-dependent counties.
  • This soil/groundwater variability drives case-by-case percolation testing and engineered (Tier 2/3) system requirements under the OWTS Policy’s risk-based tiered approach.
  • The result is higher design complexity and greater failure/environmental-liability exposure relative to flatter, more uniform soil states.
  • Installation and repair work requires a CSLB C-42 (Sanitation System), “A” General Engineering, or in limited cases C-36 (Plumbing) license, each carrying CSLB’s standard $15,000 contractor bond and liability insurance expectations, a licensing structure an underwriter should confirm against the specific scope of excavation versus plumbing-only work being quoted.

Septic Cleaning Insurance Group

Specialty septic & pumping contractor underwriting

We built this agency around one gap we kept seeing: big-box commercial insurers write septic contractor policies the same way they write policies for any other trade, missing the environmental and pollution exposure that actually matters in this business. Our team goes deep on septic-specific risk before recommending coverage, maintains relationships with carriers who understand pumping, installation, and disposal operations specifically, and keeps specialty/E&S markets in reserve for the accounts that standard carriers won’t touch.

Questions We Get A Lot

Straight answers, no insurance-speak

Yes. License #0G67847 (NPN 7642818). See the California Licensing & Regulation section above for exactly who regulates septic work here; we handle the insurance side specifically for septic and pumping contractors operating under those rules.

Most general contractor-insurance agents sell septic businesses one broad general liability policy without understanding the pollution and environmental exposure specific to pumping, installation, and disposal work. We go deep on septic-specific underwriting before recommending anything.

Yes. Renewal rate shock is one of the most common reasons septic business owners come to us. We read your current policy in full, identify what’s actually driving the increase, and shop it against carriers who understand septic risk specifically.

If you service septic systems, yes. A failed leach field or cross-contamination incident is an environmental liability claim, not a general liability claim, and a standard GL policy typically won’t cover it.

Same day. Every time. That’s an operating rule here, not a marketing promise.
